Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: gitpython-developers
Product: GitPython

Description

GitPython versions from 3.1.30 up to but not including 3.2.0 contain a critical remote code execution vulnerability in the Remote.pull() method. The vulnerability arises because the unsafe-option guard only inspects keyword arguments and not positional refspec arguments, allowing attackers controlling the refspec to inject OS commands via the --upload-pack option. This flaw affects local-path and SSH transports.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-110858 is a remote code execution vulnerability in GitPython's Remote.pull() method in versions >=3.1.30 <3.2.0. The unsafe-option guard mechanism fails to validate positional refspec arguments, enabling an attacker to supply a crafted refspec containing --upload-pack=<command>. This leads to execution of arbitrary OS commands with the privileges of the calling process over local-path or SSH transports.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary operating system commands remotely on the system running GitPython. This can lead to full system compromise depending on the privileges of the GitPython process. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.2, indicating critical severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction needed.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid using vulnerable versions or restrict usage of Remote.pull() with untrusted input. Monitor vendor channels for patches addressing this issue.
