CVE-2026-110860: Improper Link Resolution Before File Access ('Link Following') in gitpython-developers GitPython
Description
GitPython versions from 3.1.62 up to but not including 3.2.0 contain a vulnerability in the Submodule.move() function where symbolic links in intermediate path components are not properly rejected. This flaw allows an untrusted repository to commit a symlink that points outside the working tree, potentially causing the relocation of a submodule checkout outside the intended directory and corrupting the index and .gitmodules file.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-110860 is a symlink-following vulnerability in GitPython's Submodule.move() method present in versions >=3.1.62 and <3.2.0. The method performs only lexical checks on the destination path and does not reject symbolic links in intermediate components. An attacker controlling an untrusted repository can exploit this by committing a symlink that points outside the worktree, causing the application to move the submodule checkout externally, leading to index and .gitmodules corruption.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability can lead to corruption of the Git index and .gitmodules file by relocating submodule checkouts outside the intended directory structure. This may disrupt repository integrity and cause unexpected behavior in applications using GitPython to manage submodules. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9, indicating a medium severity impact with local attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction needed, and high impact on integrity.
Mitigation Recommendations
No patch or official fix information is provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid using untrusted repositories with GitPython versions >=3.1.62 and <3.2.0, or consider upgrading to version 3.2.0 or later once confirmed fixed.
