Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:57:49 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Mindwerks
Product: WildMIDI

Description

WildMIDI versions up to 0.5.0 contain a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the HMP parser function _WM_ParseNewHmp(). This flaw allows attackers to craft .hmp files with underflowed chunk lengths that cause reads beyond buffer boundaries, potentially crashing applications or exposing heap memory through WildMidi_GetInfo(). The vulnerability has a medium severity rating with a CVSS score of 6.9.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111162 is a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in WildMIDI through version 0.5.0. The issue exists in the HMP parser function _WM_ParseNewHmp(), where attackers can supply a specially crafted .hmp file containing chunk lengths in the range 0-12 that underflow and wrap to approximately 4 GB. This causes the parser to read beyond the allocated buffer, leading to application crashes or potential exposure of heap memory via the WildMidi_GetInfo() function.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause application crashes due to out-of-bounds reads and may expose sensitive heap memory contents. The vulnerability requires local access (AV:L) and user interaction (UI:P), with no privileges needed (PR:N). It does not allow for code execution but can lead to denial of service or information disclosure.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid processing untrusted or suspicious .hmp files with WildMIDI. Monitor vendor communications for updates on patches or mitigations.
