Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:57:50 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Mindwerks
Product: WildMIDI

Description

WildMIDI through 0.5.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in _WM_ParseNewHmi() in src/f_hmi.c that reads past buffers when handling 0xfe sub-events. Attackers can supply a crafted HMI file placing a 0xfe 0x10 sub-event near the buffer end to read up to four bytes past the allocation, crashing the decoding application.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111163 is a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in WildMIDI through version 0.5.0, specifically in the _WM_ParseNewHmi() function located in src/f_hmi.c. The issue arises when handling 0xfe sub-events in HMI files, where an attacker can craft a file placing a 0xfe 0x10 sub-event near the end of a buffer, causing the function to read up to four bytes past the allocated memory. This can lead to application crashes during decoding.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause the WildMIDI decoding application to crash by supplying a maliciously crafted HMI file. The vulnerability does not indicate code execution or data corruption beyond the out-of-bounds read and crash. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, avoid processing untrusted or suspicious HMI files with WildMIDI to mitigate potential crashes.
