Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:46:17 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Netgate
Product: pfSense CE

Description

Netgate pfSense CE versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0 contain an OS command injection vulnerability. Authenticated users with QinQ edit privileges can exploit this by saving a crafted parent interface name that is not properly validated. This input is later interpolated into shell commands executed as root, allowing command execution with elevated privileges.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111214 describes an OS command injection vulnerability in Netgate pfSense CE versions 2.7.0 through 2.9.0. The flaw arises because the parent interface name used in QinQ configurations is not properly neutralized before being included in ifconfig shell commands. Authenticated users with the ability to edit QinQ entries can inject arbitrary commands by crafting the 'if' value, leading to root-level command execution on the system.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated user with QinQ edit privileges to execute arbitrary commands as root on the pfSense CE system. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized control, and potential disruption of network services.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict QinQ edit privileges to trusted administrators only and monitor for suspicious activity related to interface configuration changes.
