Published: 10/15/2026 (10/15/2026, 18:46:17 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Netgate
Product: pfSense CE

Description

Netgate pfSense CE through 2.9.0 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users to execute commands as root by supplying a crafted wireless parent interface name. Attackers with limited Wireless Edit or Interface Assignments privileges can submit values like ath0;<cmd> via interfaces_wireless_edit.php or interfaces_assign.php, which interface_wireless_clone() interpolates unescaped into an ifconfig shell command.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-111215 is an OS command injection vulnerability in Netgate pfSense CE through version 2.9.0. Authenticated users with Wireless Edit or Interface Assignments privileges can supply crafted wireless parent interface names containing shell command delimiters (e.g., 'ath0;<cmd>') via interfaces_wireless_edit.php or interfaces_assign.php. The function interface_wireless_clone() interpolates this unescaped input into an ifconfig shell command, enabling execution of arbitrary commands as root.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated user with limited privileges to execute arbitrary OS commands with root privileges on the pfSense CE system. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized control, and potential disruption of network services.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to users with Wireless Edit or Interface Assignments privileges and avoid supplying untrusted input in wireless parent interface names.
