CVE-2026-111220: Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences ('CRLF Injection') in Netgate pfSense CE
Description
pfSense CE through 2.9.0 contains a crontab injection vulnerability in interfaces_ppps_edit.php that allows authenticated users to execute commands as root by injecting newlines into the ptpid or reset hour/minute fields. Attackers holding the 'WebCfg - Interfaces: PPPs: Edit' privilege can submit crafted POST values that configure_cron() writes unescaped into /etc/crontab, running arbitrary root commands on schedule.

Technical Analysis
pfSense CE versions up to 2.9.0 contain a CRLF injection vulnerability in the interfaces_ppps_edit.php script. Authenticated users holding the 'WebCfg - Interfaces: PPPs: Edit' privilege can submit crafted POST requests with newline characters in the ptpid or reset hour/minute fields. The configure_cron() function writes these unescaped inputs directly into /etc/crontab, resulting in arbitrary root command execution scheduled via cron.
Potential Impact
An attacker with the required privilege can execute arbitrary commands as root on the affected system by injecting malicious cron jobs. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized access, and persistent control over the device. The vulnerability requires authenticated access with a specific privilege, limiting exposure to authorized users.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to users with the 'WebCfg - Interfaces: PPPs: Edit' privilege and monitor for suspicious activity related to cron job modifications.
