Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Konstanty Bialkowski
Product: libmodplug

Description

CVE-2026-111270 is a medium severity heap-based out-of-bounds write vulnerability in libmodplug version 0.8.9.1 and earlier. It occurs in the CSoundFile::ReadDSM() function due to lack of validation of the nPat variable against MAX_PATTERNS. An attacker can craft a malicious DSM file with excessive pattern chunks or manipulated length values to corrupt heap memory and cause a crash.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in libmodplug through version 0.8.9.1 involves a heap-based out-of-bounds write in the CSoundFile::ReadDSM() function located in src/load_dsm.cpp. The root cause is that the variable nPat, representing the number of patterns, is not checked against the maximum allowed patterns (MAX_PATTERNS). This allows an attacker to supply a specially crafted DSM file containing more than 240 pattern chunks or a wrapping patt_len value, leading to heap memory corruption and potential process crash.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to heap memory corruption, which may cause the consuming process to crash. There is no indication of privilege escalation or remote code execution. The attack requires local vector access (AV:L) and user interaction (UI:P).

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, avoid processing untrusted or suspicious DSM files to mitigate risk.
