Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Konstanty Bialkowski
Product: libmodplug

Description

CVE-2026-111271 is a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in libmodplug version 0.8.9.1 and earlier. It occurs in the CSoundFile::ReadAMS2() function when processing crafted AMS files with pattern effect bytes that keep bit 7 set. This causes the decoder to read beyond the input buffer, potentially crashing applications using libmodplug.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists in libmodplug through version 0.8.9.1 in the CSoundFile::ReadAMS2() function located in src/load_ams.cpp. An attacker can craft an AMS module with pattern effect bytes that maintain bit 7 set, causing the decoder to read adjacent heap memory beyond the intended buffer. This out-of-bounds read can lead to application crashes in any software that consumes libmodplug for AMS file processing.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows reading of adjacent heap memory, which can cause application crashes. There is no indication of code execution or information disclosure beyond the out-of-bounds read. The impact is primarily denial of service due to crashing.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted AMS files with libmodplug.
