Published: 10/18/2026 (10/18/2026, 12:30:26 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: icculus
Product: smpeg

Description

smpeg through 2.0.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in MPEGsystem::FillBuffer() that allows attackers to read past the 16384-byte buffer by supplying a crafted system header stream table. Attackers can provide an MPEG file whose stream table bytes all set the high bit, which crashes applications opening it through SMPEG_new, SMPEG_new_rwops, or SMPEG_new_data.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability CVE-2026-112009 affects icculus smpeg through version 2.0.0. It is a heap out-of-bounds read in the MPEGsystem::FillBuffer() function. Attackers can exploit this by supplying an MPEG file whose system header stream table bytes all have the high bit set, causing the function to read past the 16384-byte buffer limit. This results in crashes of applications that use SMPEG_new, SMPEG_new_rwops, or SMPEG_new_data to open the crafted MPEG files.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a denial of service by crashing applications that process malicious MPEG files with the crafted stream table. There is no indication of code execution or information disclosure beyond the out-of-bounds read and crash.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official fix information is provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted MPEG files with affected versions of smpeg.
