Published: 10/19/2026 (10/19/2026, 22:00:52 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: python-pillow
Product: Pillow

Description

A vulnerability in the python-pillow Pillow library versions 5.3.0 through 12.x allows disclosure of uninitialized memory contents when decoding certain TIFF images. This occurs because the library does not clear unused buffer memory after decoding JPEG-compressed or Group 4 fax TIFF data, potentially leaking stale heap data. The issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

Technical Analysis

Pillow, a Python imaging library, versions 5.3.0 up to but not including 13.0.0 have a vulnerability where uninitialized memory can be returned as pixel data during TIFF image decoding. Specifically, when libtiff performs a short decode of JPEG-compressed or Group 4 fax TIFF data, the internal _decodeStrip and _decodeTile buffers may be larger than the actual decoded data, and Pillow does not clear the unwritten tail of these buffers. This can lead to disclosure of stale heap contents without causing memory corruption or crashes. The vulnerability affects the tile decoding path from version 5.3.0 and the strip decoding path from version 6.0.0. The issue is resolved in Pillow 13.0.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can craft a malicious TIFF image that, when loaded by an application using the affected Pillow versions, causes the application to disclose uninitialized memory contents from the heap. This information disclosure does not cause memory corruption or process crashes but may reveal sensitive data residing in memory. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Pillow version 13.0.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated or required.
