Published: 10/20/2026 (10/20/2026, 14:53:41 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: vitejs
Product: launch-editor

Description

launch-editor allows users to open files with line numbers in editor from Node.js. Prior to 2.14.2, launch-editor did not escape % on Windows when passing an argument to cmd. When an environment variable contained a malicious value, it was possible that that content to be executed. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.14.2.

Technical Analysis

The launch-editor component of vitejs allows users to open files at specific line numbers in an editor from Node.js. Versions before 2.14.2 failed to escape the % character on Windows when passing arguments to the cmd shell. This improper neutralization of special elements (CWE-78) could lead to OS command injection if an attacker controls an environment variable with malicious content. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.3 (medium severity) and is fixed in version 2.14.2.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can influence environment variables on a Windows system running a vulnerable version of launch-editor could execute arbitrary OS commands via crafted input containing % characters. This could lead to partial system compromise or unauthorized command execution. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade launch-editor to version 2.14.2 or later, where the vulnerability is fixed by properly escaping % characters on Windows. No other mitigation is indicated.
