Vendor/Project: SmileCDR
Product: HAPI FHIR

Description

CVE-2026-113873 is a vulnerability in SmileCDR HAPI FHIR where the software improperly handles highly compressed data. An unauthenticated attacker can send specially crafted compressed payloads that, when decompressed, exhaust server heap memory or crash certain services. This results in a denial-of-service condition. The vulnerability has a high severity score of 7.5 and affects all versions starting from 0. No patch information is currently available.

Technical Analysis

SmileCDR HAPI FHIR does not properly handle highly compressed data, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to send compressed payloads that exhaust server heap or crash certain services when decompressed. This is classified under CWE-409 (Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data leading to data amplification). The vulnerability can cause denial of service by resource exhaustion. It has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, indicating network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, unchanged scope, no confidentiality or integrity impact, but high availability impact.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause denial of service by sending highly compressed payloads that exhaust server heap memory or crash services in SmileCDR HAPI FHIR. This disrupts availability but does not impact confidentiality or integrity. The attack requires no authentication and can be performed remotely over the network.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider limiting or filtering compressed payloads or applying resource usage limits to mitigate potential denial-of-service conditions.
