Published: 10/21/2026 (10/21/2026, 00:36:59 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: jelmer
Product: dulwich

Description

Dulwich versions before 1.2.9 contain a denial of service vulnerability caused by infinite recursion in the Pack.resolve_object function. This occurs when processing malicious packfiles with self-referential OFS_DELTA objects that have a delta_offset of 0, leading to CPU exhaustion during clone, fetch, or cat-file operations.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Dulwich prior to version 1.2.9 involves an infinite loop triggered by self-referential OFS_DELTA objects in packfiles. Specifically, the Pack.resolve_object function does not properly handle delta_offset values of 0, causing infinite recursion. An attacker can exploit this by supplying a crafted packfile during Git operations such as clone, fetch, or cat-file, resulting in denial of service through CPU resource exhaustion.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation leads to denial of service by exhausting CPU resources during Git operations that process packfiles. This can disrupt normal operation of applications or services relying on Dulwich for Git functionality.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade to Dulwich version 1.2.9 or later where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation or workaround is indicated in the provided data.
