Description

CVE-2026-114437 is a medium severity vulnerability in the Golang Chi web framework affecting versions before 5.4.0. The ClientIPFromXFF middleware improperly trusts X-Forwarded-For headers without verifying that the direct TCP peer address belongs to a trusted CIDR. This allows a client connecting directly to the server to spoof the client IP by appending a trusted proxy address in the header.

Technical Analysis

The Golang Chi web framework's ClientIPFromXFF middleware is vulnerable because it skips any X-Forwarded-For entries from configured trusted CIDRs but does not verify that the actual TCP connection's remote address is within those CIDRs. Consequently, an attacker who can connect directly to the server can insert a trusted proxy IP in the X-Forwarded-For header and influence the client IP returned by middleware.GetClientIP. This vulnerability affects all chi versions prior to 5.4.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to connect directly to the Go server can spoof the client IP address by injecting a trusted proxy IP in the X-Forwarded-For header. This may lead to incorrect client IP identification, potentially impacting access control, logging, or rate limiting that relies on accurate client IP information. The CVSS score is 4.8 (medium severity), indicating limited confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fixed version is available starting from chi 5.4.0. Users should upgrade to version 5.4.0 or later to address this vulnerability. No other vendor advisory or patch information is provided, so check the official go-chi project resources for the patch and further guidance.
