CVE-2026-72815: Authentication Bypass by Spoofing in go-chi chi

Medium
Published: 08/14/2026 (08/14/2026, 12:31:25 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: go-chi
Product: chi

Description

go-chi chi versions >= 5.2.1 and before 5.3.0 contain an IP spoofing vulnerability in the RealIP middleware, which blindly trusts the first (leftmost) value of the X-Forwarded-For HTTP header. A remote attacker can bypass IP-based access control lists and rate-limiting mechanisms, and forge log entries, by supplying a spoofed IP address in the X-Forwarded-For header. The issue is fixed in version 5.3.0.

Technical Analysis

The go-chi chi package versions 5.2.1 and before 5.3.0 have an IP spoofing vulnerability in the RealIP middleware. The middleware blindly trusts the first (leftmost) value of the X-Forwarded-For HTTP header, which can be manipulated by a remote attacker to spoof their IP address. This enables bypassing IP-based access control lists and rate-limiting mechanisms, as well as forging log entries. The issue is resolved in version 5.3.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can bypass IP-based access controls and rate limiting by supplying a spoofed IP address in the X-Forwarded-For header. This can lead to unauthorized access or evasion of restrictions based on IP address. Additionally, log entries can be forged, potentially misleading forensic analysis or monitoring.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to go-chi chi version 5.3.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other official remediation or temporary fixes are indicated.
