VulnerabilityCVE-2026-115394cvecve-2026-115394
Published: 10/22/2026 (10/22/2026, 19:14:00 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: NationalSecurityAgency
Product: ghidra

Description

Ghidra versions up to 12.2 contain a vulnerability in the BinaryField.read() function where an unchecked 32-bit length field can cause uncontrolled memory allocation. This can lead to heap exhaustion and an OutOfMemoryError when importing a crafted GZF packed database file, resulting in a denial of service by aborting the import process.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-115394 describes an uncontrolled memory allocation vulnerability in NationalSecurityAgency's Ghidra software through version 12.2. The flaw exists in the BinaryField.read() method, which processes a 32-bit length field without validation. An attacker can craft a malicious GZF packed database file that, when imported by a user, triggers excessive heap memory allocation leading to an OutOfMemoryError in PackedDatabase.open(). This error aborts the import operation and causes a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in denial of service by exhausting heap memory during the import of a malicious GZF packed database file. The application throws an OutOfMemoryError and aborts the import, disrupting normal use of Ghidra. There is no indication of privilege escalation, code execution, or data disclosure.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should avoid importing untrusted or suspicious GZF packed database files to prevent triggering the vulnerability.
