Published: 10/23/2026 (10/23/2026, 19:24:51 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: py-pdf
Product: pypdf

Description

pypdf versions prior to 6.21.2 contain a vulnerability where an attacker can craft a PDF that repeatedly references the same nonexistent indirect object. This causes repeated full-file recovery loads and long runtimes when accessing certain file parts such as pages. The issue is fixed in version 6.21.2.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-115572 is an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability (CWE-400) in the pypdf library, a pure-Python PDF processing tool. Versions before 6.21.2 allow an attacker to create a malicious PDF that repeatedly references the same nonexistent indirect object. This triggers repeated full-file recovery operations, causing excessive CPU and memory usage and significantly increased processing time when accessing affected parts of the PDF, such as pages. The vulnerability is addressed by a fix in pypdf version 6.21.2.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause denial of service or degraded performance by forcing the pypdf library to consume excessive resources during PDF processing. This can lead to long runtimes and potential application unavailability when handling crafted malicious PDFs. There is no indication of privilege escalation or data disclosure from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade pypdf to version 6.21.2 or later, where this uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation actions are indicated.
