Upgrade phpMyFAQ to version 4.1.10 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Until upgraded, consider disabling the records.enableDeleteQuestion feature to reduce impact. Monitor for suspicious activity involving the POST /api/faq/create endpoint and CAPTCHA bypass attempts.
Description
phpMyFAQ versions before 4.1.10 have an object-level authorization bypass vulnerability. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to modify or delete visitor questions by providing arbitrary openQuestionID values to the POST /api/faq/create endpoint. Attackers who solve the CAPTCHA can rewrite question categories, forge answered entries in the faqquestion_history, or delete questions permanently if the records.enableDeleteQuestion setting is enabled.
Impact
The vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to alter or delete visitor questions, potentially compromising the integrity and availability of FAQ content. This can lead to misinformation, data loss, and unauthorized content manipulation. The high CVSS score (8.7) reflects the ease of exploitation (network vector, no privileges required) and significant impact on data integrity and availability.
