Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-11885) involves a classic buffer overflow (CWE-120) in IBM PowerVM Hypervisor. Specifically, the hypervisor fails to properly check the size of input during a hypervisor call, allowing a crafted input to overflow a buffer. The affected versions include FW1110.00 to FW1110.20, FW1060.00 to FW1060.71, and FW950.00 to FW950.H1. Exploitation can lead to hypervisor crashes or compromise of OS memory integrity. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 8.4, indicating high severity with local attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, scope changed, no confidentiality impact, high integrity impact, and high availability impact. No official patch or remediation level has been published yet.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause the IBM PowerVM Hypervisor to crash or compromise the integrity of the operating system memory. This can lead to denial of service or potentially allow an attacker to alter OS memory, impacting system stability and security. There is no known public exploit in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the hypervisor interface to trusted users only and monitor for unusual hypervisor calls. Avoid running untrusted code with privileges that can invoke hypervisor calls.
