Until a fix is available, restrict write access to shared storage areas to trusted users only and monitor application usage patterns to detect unusual file append operations. Avoid using the legacy GridFS file handling in affected versions if possible.

Description

CVE-2026-120684 is a vulnerability in the MongoDB C Driver's legacy GridFS file handling that causes uninitialized process memory to be treated as valid file content and stored on the server. This can lead to unintended disclosure of sensitive information, including credentials, when a database user with write access manipulates files in a shared storage area. The flaw affects versions from 1.25.0 through 1.30.14 and 2.0.0 through 2.5.7. The vulnerability has a medium severity rating with a CVSS score of 6. No known exploits or patches are currently documented.
