Upgrade to HDF5 version 2.3.0 or later, where the vulnerability has been fixed. No other mitigation or workaround is indicated. Since the issue is addressed in the fixed version, applying the official patch is the recommended remediation.
Description
CVE-2026-120754 is a low-severity vulnerability in The HDF Group's Scale-Offset Filter affecting HDF5 versions prior to 2.3.0. It involves an uninitialized memory read in the H5Z__filter_scaleoffset() function, where truncated chunk data causes the filter to decompress uninitialized heap memory. This can lead to disclosure of unrelated process memory to an attacker who can induce reading of a crafted HDF5 dataset. The issue stems from an incomplete fix of a previous vulnerability (CVE-2026-19029).
