Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-12723 is a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in the Kirki WordPress plugin prior to version 6.0.12. The plugin fails to perform authorization checks on a REST route, enabling unauthenticated attackers to modify arbitrary existing comments and submit comments that appear pre-approved and originate from spoofed identities. This bypasses the intended comment moderation mechanisms.

Potential Impact

An attacker can manipulate the content of existing comments and inject new comments that are automatically approved without moderation. This can lead to misinformation, impersonation, and abuse of the comment system on affected WordPress sites using vulnerable Kirki versions.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is currently available. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is released, consider disabling the vulnerable REST route or restricting access to it as a temporary mitigation.
