Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves improper neutralization of input during web page generation in the Theme API component of Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). Authenticated users with administrator privileges can exploit this cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw to read or write certain files. The issue affects multiple DSM versions before specific patch releases: versions prior to 7.2.1-69057-12, 7.2.2-72806-9, 7.3.2-86009-4, and 7.4-90075. The CVSS 3.1 vector indicates network attack vector, low attack complexity, high privileges required, user interaction required, scope changed, and low confidentiality and integrity impact with no availability impact.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows remote authenticated administrators to perform cross-site scripting attacks that can lead to reading or writing limited files on the affected system. This could potentially compromise confidentiality and integrity of some data. There is no indication of availability impact or known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Synology DiskStation Manager versions 7.2.1-69057-12, 7.2.2-72806-9, 7.3.2-86009-4, and 7.4-90075. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated.
