Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: duracelltomi
Product: GTM4WP – A Google Tag Manager (GTM) plugin for WordPress

Description

The GTM4WP plugin for WordPress, used for Google Tag Manager integration, is vulnerable to stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via WooCommerce billing fields in all versions up to and including 1.22.3. This vulnerability arises from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute when users access affected pages. Exploitation requires the WooCommerce order data integration option to be enabled and involves placing a guest checkout order with a JavaScript payload in billing fields such as the billing first name.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-16597 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in the GTM4WP WordPress plugin, specifically affecting the WooCommerce billing fields when the WooCommerce order data integration option (GTM4WP_OPTION_INTEGRATE_WCORDERDATA) is enabled. The vulnerability is due to improper neutralization of input during web page generation, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript code via guest checkout billing fields. This malicious code executes in the context of users viewing the injected pages, potentially leading to session hijacking or other client-side attacks. The vulnerability affects all plugin versions up to and including 1.22.3. No official patch or remediation level has been provided as of the published date.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browsers of users who access the injected pages. This can lead to information disclosure, session hijacking, or other client-side impacts. The vulnerability requires the WooCommerce order data integration option to be enabled, limiting exposure to sites using this feature. There is no indication of impact on system availability or integrity beyond client-side script execution.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, it is recommended to disable the WooCommerce order data integration option (GTM4WP_OPTION_INTEGRATE_WCORDERDATA) if it is not required. Additionally, carefully validate and sanitize all user inputs in WooCommerce billing fields to prevent injection of malicious scripts.
