Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-16608 is a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in the Download Monitor WordPress plugin prior to version 5.2.6. The plugin fails to perform proper authorization checks on a download-logging AJAX action and exposes the nonce protecting this action to unauthenticated visitors. This allows attackers without authentication to inject arbitrary entries into the download logs, artificially inflating download statistics on the affected site.

Potential Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can manipulate download statistics by injecting arbitrary log entries. This may affect the integrity and reliability of download metrics but does not indicate direct compromise of site confidentiality or availability based on the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the affected AJAX action if possible or monitor for unusual download log activity.
