Technical Analysis

This vulnerability affects MZ Automation libiec61850 up to version 1.6.1, specifically in the function MmsMapping_varAccessSpecToObjectReference in the file iec61850_common.c. Improper handling of the GetNamedVariableListAttributesResponse.itemId argument can lead to a heap-based buffer overflow. The attack vector is local with low complexity and requires low privileges. The vulnerability has been publicly disclosed, but no official patch or remediation has been provided by the vendor as of the publication date.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to memory corruption due to a heap-based buffer overflow, potentially causing application crashes or arbitrary code execution under local attack conditions. However, the CVSS score of 4.8 indicates a medium severity impact, reflecting limited attack scope and complexity.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official fix or patch is currently available from the vendor. Since the vulnerability requires local access, restricting local user privileges and access to the affected software may reduce risk. Monitor vendor channels for updates or patches. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
