CVE-2026-2332: CWE-444 Inconsistent interpretation of HTTP requests ('HTTP Request/Response smuggling') in Eclipse Foundation Eclipse Jetty

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-2332cvecve-2026-2332cwe-444
Published: Tue Apr 14 2026 (04/14/2026, 10:59:10 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Eclipse Foundation
Product: Eclipse Jetty

Description

In Eclipse Jetty, the HTTP/1.1 parser is vulnerable to request smuggling when chunk extensions are used, similar to the "funky chunks" techniques outlined here: * https://w4ke.info/2025/06/18/funky-chunks.html * https://w4ke.info/2025/10/29/funky-chunks-2.html Jetty terminates chunk extension parsing at \r\n inside quoted strings instead of treating this as an error. POST / HTTP/1.1 Host: localhost Transfer-Encoding: chunked 1;ext="val X 0 GET /smuggled HTTP/1.1 ... Note how the chunk extension does not close the double quotes, and it is able to inject a smuggled request.

Technical Analysis

Eclipse Jetty versions 9.4.0 through 12.1.0 contain a vulnerability in the HTTP/1.1 chunked transfer encoding parser. Specifically, when chunk extensions include unterminated quoted strings, Jetty terminates parsing at the CRLF inside the quotes rather than flagging an error. This behavior allows an attacker to craft 'funky chunks' that smuggle additional HTTP requests within a single request stream, exploiting inconsistent interpretation of HTTP requests (CWE-444). The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.4, indicating high severity with network attack vector, high complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality and integrity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to HTTP request smuggling, which may allow attackers to bypass security controls, poison web caches, perform cross-site scripting, or gain unauthorized access to internal resources. The CVSS score reflects high confidentiality and integrity impact but no availability impact. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or temporary mitigation has been published, users should monitor Eclipse Foundation advisories for updates. Until a fix is available, consider deploying Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) or reverse proxies that can detect and block malformed chunked requests as a potential interim mitigation.
