Vendor/Project: verbb
Product: formie

Description

Formie is a Craft CMS plugin for creating forms. Prior to 2.2.20 and 3.1.24, unauthenticated users could submit crafted values into Hidden fields (with Default value → Custom) that were evaluated as Twig during submission handling, which could lead to serious compromise of the Craft site (depending on template/sandbox behavior). This vulnerability is fixed in 2.2.20 and 3.1.24.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in verbb formie plugin arises from improper control of code generation (CWE-94) where unauthenticated attackers can inject Twig template code via Hidden fields with Custom default values. During form submission, these injected values are evaluated as Twig templates, potentially allowing remote code execution or other severe impacts on the Craft CMS site. This affects versions before 2.2.20 and between 3.0.0-beta.1 and 3.1.24. The issue is resolved by updating to formie 2.2.20 or 3.1.24.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary Twig code within the context of the Craft CMS site, potentially leading to full site compromise including data disclosure, modification, or denial of service. The vulnerability has a critical CVSS score of 9.8 reflecting its high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability without requiring authentication or user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in formie versions 2.2.20 and 3.1.24. Users should upgrade to these or later versions immediately to remediate this vulnerability. There is no indication that temporary mitigations or workarounds are provided by the vendor. Patch status is confirmed by the version information in the advisory.
