Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-23734 is a relative path traversal vulnerability in the XWiki Platform's xwiki-commons component. Versions before 18.1.0-rc-1, 17.10.3, 17.4.9, and 16.10.17 allow attackers to read arbitrary configuration files by exploiting the 'resource' parameter in the ssx and jsx endpoints. The attack involves using leading slashes and relative path sequences (e.g., '/../') to traverse directories and access files such as WEB-INF/xwiki.cfg. This vulnerability is rated critical with a CVSS 4.0 score of 9.3 and does not require authentication or user interaction to exploit. The issue has been fixed in the specified patched versions.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated attackers to read sensitive configuration files on the server, potentially exposing confidential information that could facilitate further attacks or compromise the system. The vulnerability affects multiple versions of XWiki Platform prior to the patched releases. No known active exploitation has been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

The vulnerability has been officially patched in XWiki Platform versions 18.1.0-rc-1, 17.10.3, 17.4.9, and 16.10.17. Users should upgrade to one of these versions or later to remediate this issue. Since this is not a cloud service, remediation depends on applying these updates. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory information embedded in the versioning details.
