AI-suggested

A fix is available and has been incorporated into Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-136.136, 6.8.0-1064.72, 6.8.0-1059.67, and several specific older kernel versions including 5.0.0-1025.28, 5.3.0-1033.35, and 4.15.0-1002.2 through 4.15.0-1022.23. Users should update to a patched kernel version to remediate this issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's memory management subsystem (filemap) was resolved, addressing an integer overflow in the nr_pages calculation within filemap_map_pages(). This overflow could cause the kernel to map beyond the size of a large folio, potentially corrupting memory management metadata such as page mapcounts. The issue was reproducible under stress-ng on Arm64 with kernel v7.0-rc3 and involved race conditions between file mapping and inode size truncation. The fix involves recalculating the file end offset before retrieving folios to maintain consistency and prevent overflow.
