AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied promptly. The vulnerability is fixed by validating the entire DACL structure before rewriting it in the Linux kernel SMB client code. Users should update to the fixed Linux kernel versions as provided by their distribution vendors. According to the Ubuntu advisory USN-8488-1, these fixes are included in recent kernel updates. No additional mitigations are specified beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client was resolved that involved improper validation of the Discretionary Access Control List (DACL) before rewriting it. The issue allowed a malicious SMB server to supply a truncated DACL with a valid header but incomplete body, potentially causing out-of-bounds access during ACL processing. This flaw was fixed by extending structural validation of the entire DACL and each Access Control Entry (ACE) before use. The vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 6.8.0-136.136 and several specific older versions. A patch is available as part of the Linux kernel security updates.
