VulnerabilityCVE-2026-40031cvecve-2026-40031cwe-427
Published: Wed Apr 08 2026 (04/08/2026, 21:35:26 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: ufrisk
Product: MemProcFS

Description

MemProcFS before 5.17 contains multiple unsafe library-loading patterns that enable DLL and shared-library hijacking across six attack surfaces, including bare-name LoadLibraryU and dlopen calls without path qualification for vmmpyc, libMSCompression, and plugin DLLs. An attacker who places a malicious DLL or shared library in the working directory or manipulates LD_LIBRARY_PATH can achieve arbitrary code execution when MemProcFS loads.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-40031 is an uncontrolled search path element vulnerability in ufrisk MemProcFS prior to version 5.17. The software uses unsafe library-loading calls such as LoadLibraryU and dlopen without specifying full paths for vmmpyc, libMSCompression, and plugin DLLs. This allows an attacker to hijack the loading process by placing malicious DLLs or shared libraries in the working directory or by manipulating the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, leading to arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability is categorized under CWE-427 (Uncontrolled Search Path Element) and affects local attack vectors with low attack complexity but requires user interaction.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code within the context of MemProcFS by hijacking DLL/shared library loading. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system or application privileges. The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.5 reflects high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or patch links are provided and the remediation level is unspecified, users should monitor the vendor's announcements for updates. Until a patch is available, avoid running MemProcFS in untrusted directories and do not allow manipulation of LD_LIBRARY_PATH in environments where MemProcFS is executed.
