VulnerabilityCVE-2026-41069cvecve-2026-41069cwe-125cwe-476
Published: 05/22/2026 (05/22/2026, 20:49:16 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: strukturag
Product: libheif

Description

libheif is a HEIF and AVIF file format decoder and encoder. In versions 1.21.2 and prior, a malformed HEIF sequence file can trigger an out-of-bounds read in core sequence parsing logic, causing DoS. A malformed file can have stco.entry_count == 0 (creating no chunks) while still passing validation because saio.entry_count == 0 matches, but with saiz.sample_count > 0 the SampleAuxInfoReader constructor still enters its loop. This leads to an out-of-bounds dereference on the empty chunks[0] in chunked mode.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in libheif (CVE-2026-41069) arises from improper handling of malformed HEIF sequence files where stco.entry_count is zero, causing no chunks to be created, yet saiz.sample_count is greater than zero. This mismatch allows the SampleAuxInfoReader constructor to enter a loop that dereferences an empty chunks array, resulting in an out-of-bounds read and potential denial of service. Affected versions are all libheif releases before 1.22.0. The issue is classified under CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read) and CWE-476 (NULL Pointer Dereference).

Potential Impact

Successful triggering of this vulnerability leads to denial of service by crashing the application processing the malformed HEIF file. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The CVSS v3.1 score is 6.5 (medium severity), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, unchanged scope, and impact limited to availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, avoid processing untrusted or malformed HEIF files to reduce risk. Monitor for updates from strukturag regarding libheif version 1.22.0 or later that may address this issue.
