Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Apache Nutch Server (Nutch REST API) involves missing authorization (CWE-862), improper control of code generation (CWE-94), unsafe reflection (CWE-470), and improper control of dynamically-managed code resources (CWE-913). It affects Apache Nutch versions from 1.11 through 1.22. The issue allows unauthorized users to potentially execute or inject code due to lack of proper authorization and unsafe handling of external input. Apache Nutch 1.23 mitigates this by removing the Nutch Server component entirely.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability could allow unauthorized users to execute or inject code via the Nutch REST API due to missing authorization and unsafe reflection. This may lead to unauthorized actions or compromise of the affected system. However, no known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users are recommended to upgrade to Apache Nutch version 1.23, which removes the vulnerable Nutch Server component. If upgrading is not feasible, restrict access to the Nutch Service instances to trusted users only. Refer to the official Apache Nutch security advisories for further guidance.
