Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: requarks
Product: wiki

Description

CVE-2026-44224 is a high-severity privilege escalation vulnerability in Wiki. js versions prior to 2. 5. 313. It allows a user with the manage:users permission to escalate their privileges to full site administrator by exploiting improper validation in the users. update GraphQL mutation. Specifically, the mutation accepts an arbitrary groups array without verifying group ownership or restrictions, enabling self-assignment to the Administrators group. This leads to a fresh JWT token carrying manage:system permissions after re-authentication. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2. 5.

Technical Analysis

Wiki.js, an open source Node.js wiki application, had a privilege management flaw in versions before 2.5.313. The users.update GraphQL mutation accepted an arbitrary groups array and applied it directly to the database without validating the group IDs or checking ownership. A user with manage:users permission could exploit this by assigning themselves to the Administrators group, thereby gaining manage:system permissions and full site administrator access after re-authentication. This vulnerability is classified under CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management) and has a CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.6, indicating high severity. The issue is resolved in version 2.5.313.

Potential Impact

An attacker with the manage:users permission can escalate their privileges to full site administrator by manipulating group assignments in the users.update mutation. This grants them manage:system permissions, effectively giving complete control over the Wiki.js instance. The impact is significant as it compromises the integrity and security of the entire wiki platform.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in Wiki.js version 2.5.313. Users should upgrade to version 2.5.313 or later to remediate this issue. Since no official patch link or advisory is provided, verify the upgrade availability from the official Wiki.js project resources. No temporary mitigations are indicated in the available data.
