CVE-2026-44691: CWE-829: Inclusion of Functionality from Untrusted Control Sphere in Eclipse Foundation Eclipse Theia
In Eclipse Theia versions prior to 1.69.0, custom task definitions in workspace files (e.g. .theia/tasks.json, .vscode/tasks.json) could be executed without requiring workspace trust. An attacker could craft a malicious repository that, when cloned and opened in Theia, leads to execution of arbitrary commands with the user's privileges. In combination with AI chat features and a workspace .theia/settings.json that disabled tool confirmation, this could be triggered automatically by sending a message in the AI chat.

Technical Summary
CVE-2026-44691 affects Eclipse Theia versions before 1.69.0 by permitting execution of custom task definitions in workspace files (such as .theia/tasks.json or .vscode/tasks.json) without requiring workspace trust. An attacker can exploit this by providing a malicious repository that, when cloned and opened in Theia, executes arbitrary commands under the user's privileges. The vulnerability can be triggered automatically in conjunction with AI chat features if the workspace .theia/settings.json disables tool confirmation. This represents an inclusion of functionality from an untrusted control sphere (CWE-829).
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows arbitrary command execution with the privileges of the user running Eclipse Theia, potentially leading to system compromise or unauthorized actions. The vulnerability can be triggered by simply opening a malicious repository, and may be automatically activated via AI chat features if configured to disable tool confirmation, increasing the risk of unnoticed exploitation.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, users should avoid opening untrusted repositories in Eclipse Theia and disable or carefully configure AI chat features to require tool confirmation. Monitor official Eclipse Foundation communications for updates regarding patches or mitigations.
