Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: apostrophecms
Product: apostrophe

Description

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Version 4.29.0 has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the image widget functionality. A user with the Editor role can configure an image widget link to use a javascript: URL payload. Because editors have permission to publish pages, the malicious widget can be published to the live site. When another user, including an administrator or public visitor, clicks the affected image/link, arbitrary JavaScript executes in the victim’s browser. As of time of publication, no known patched versions are available.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-45011 is a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in ApostropheCMS 4.29.0 affecting the image widget feature. Editors can insert a javascript: URL payload into an image widget link, which is then published and executed in the browsers of users who click the link, including administrators and public visitors. This vulnerability arises from improper neutralization of input during web page generation (CWE-79, CWE-116). The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.3, indicating high severity. No official fix or patch is available as of the publication date.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with Editor privileges to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of users visiting the affected site, potentially leading to session hijacking, defacement, or other malicious actions. The vulnerability affects confidentiality and integrity but does not impact availability. Because editors can publish pages, the malicious payload can reach a wide audience, including administrators and public visitors.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently available for this vulnerability. Until a fix is released, restrict Editor role permissions to prevent untrusted users from publishing image widgets with arbitrary links. Consider implementing additional input validation or filtering on URLs in image widgets. Monitor vendor advisories for updates and apply patches promptly once available.
