Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: OISF
Product: suricata

Description

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Starting in version 8.0.0 and prior to version 8.0.5, Suricata's IP defragmentation code could deadlock when processing fragmented traffic containing an encapsulated tunnel protocol whose payload is itself fragmented. Version 8.0.5 contains a fix. No known workarounds are available.

Technical Analysis

Suricata versions 8.0.0 through 8.0.4 contain a deadlock vulnerability (CWE-833) in the IP defragmentation code. The deadlock can be triggered by processing fragmented network traffic that includes an encapsulated tunnel protocol whose payload is itself fragmented. This condition causes Suricata to hang, impacting its availability. The issue is resolved in version 8.0.5.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability causes a denial of service condition by deadlocking Suricata's IP defragmentation process, resulting in a loss of availability. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity according to the CVSS vector. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Suricata to version 8.0.5 or later, which contains the official fix for this deadlock vulnerability. No workarounds are currently available.
