Technical Analysis

This vulnerability affects Oracle VM VirtualBox 7.2.12 and is classified under CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management). It allows an attacker with low privileges and logon access to the host system where VirtualBox runs to escalate privileges and compromise the VirtualBox environment. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.8, indicating high severity with impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vendor advisory from Oracle's July 2026 Critical Patch Update does not explicitly confirm a patch for this specific vulnerability, though it references a large set of cumulative patches. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to complete compromise of Oracle VM VirtualBox, affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the virtualization environment. This could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code or gain control over virtual machines and the host system's virtualization layer.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Oracle advisory at https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpujul2026.html for current remediation guidance. Oracle strongly recommends applying all relevant Critical Patch Updates promptly. Until a specific patch is confirmed, restrict logon access to the infrastructure running Oracle VM VirtualBox to trusted users only.
