CVE-2026-47210: CWE-913: Improper Control of Dynamically-Managed Code Resources in patriksimek vm2

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-47210cvecve-2026-47210cwe-913
Published: 06/12/2026 (06/12/2026, 14:17:22 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: patriksimek
Product: vm2

Description

vm2 is an open source vm/sandbox for Node.js. Prior to version 3.11.4, a sandbox escape vulnerability in vm2 allows arbitrary code execution in the host process when untrusted code is executed with async support on runtimes exposing WebAssembly JSPI (WebAssembly.promising / WebAssembly.Suspending). In the tested configuration, a JSPI-backed Promise can reach Promise.prototype.finally() in a way that bypasses the expected Promise-species hardening and exposes a host-originated rejection object to attacker-controlled species logic, breaking the sandbox boundary. This issue has been patched in version 3.11.4.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-47210 is a critical sandbox escape vulnerability in the vm2 Node.js sandbox prior to version 3.11.4. The flaw arises when untrusted code executes asynchronously on runtimes exposing WebAssembly JSPI (such as WebAssembly.promising or WebAssembly.Suspending). In this context, a JSPI-backed Promise can reach Promise.prototype.finally() in a manner that bypasses the expected Promise-species hardening. This allows exposure of a host-originated rejection object to attacker-controlled species logic, effectively breaking the sandbox boundary and enabling arbitrary code execution in the host process. The vulnerability is patched in vm2 version 3.11.4.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to escape the vm2 sandbox and execute arbitrary code within the host process. This compromises the isolation guarantees of the sandbox, potentially leading to full system compromise or unauthorized access to host resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in vm2 version 3.11.4. Users should upgrade to version 3.11.4 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified.
