Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Canonical
Product: Ubuntu Linux

Description

Ubuntu Linux 6.8 contains AppArmor SAUCE patches which fail to acquire a lock when modifying a linked list. An unprivileged local user could trigger the race condition that can lead to a use-after-free (UAF) and, theoretically, arbitrary code execution.

Technical Analysis

Ubuntu Linux version 6.8 includes AppArmor SAUCE patches that do not acquire a necessary lock when modifying a linked list, causing a race condition. This race condition can lead to a use-after-free (CWE-416) vulnerability exploitable by an unprivileged local user. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.8, reflecting high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No official remediation or patch has been published yet by Canonical.

Potential Impact

An unprivileged local user could exploit this vulnerability to cause a use-after-free condition, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. This could compromise system confidentiality, integrity, and availability. However, no known exploits are currently reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, consider restricting local user access and monitoring for suspicious activity related to AppArmor modifications. Avoid running untrusted code locally.
