Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: med-united
Product: epa4all

Description

A critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-48021) exists in med-united's epa4all product prior to version 2026-05-20. The flaw involves improper certificate validation during the TLS connection to the ePA backend, allowing an attacker who intercepts the connection to complete the VAU handshake with attacker-controlled keys. This enables the attacker to read and modify sensitive inner HTTP traffic, including patient consent decisions, medication data, document operations, authorization tokens, and entitlement queries, as well as inject arbitrary requests. The issue has been patched in version 2026-05-20.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-48021 is a vulnerability in med-united's epa4all software caused by improper certificate validation (CWE-295) during the TLS handshake with the ePA backend. An attacker capable of intercepting the TLS connection can complete the VAU handshake using attacker-controlled keys, thereby obtaining session encryption keys. This compromises the confidentiality and integrity of all inner HTTP traffic, including sensitive patient and authorization data, and allows injection of arbitrary requests through the hijacked channel. The vulnerability affects all versions prior to 2026-05-20 and has been fixed in that version.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated remote attacker who can intercept the TLS connection to decrypt and modify sensitive patient-related data and authorization tokens exchanged between epa4all and the ePA backend. This compromises confidentiality and integrity of critical healthcare information and enables unauthorized request injection. There is no impact on availability. The CVSS v3.1 score is 9.1 (critical), reflecting high impact on confidentiality and integrity with network attack vector and no required privileges or user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability has been patched in epa4all version 2026-05-20. Users should upgrade to version 2026-05-20 or later to remediate this issue. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated.
