VulnerabilityCVE-2026-54342cvecve-2026-54342cwe-295
Published: 07/24/2026 (07/24/2026, 18:26:34 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: med-united
Product: epa4all

Description

In epa4all, prior to version 2026-05-20, an attacker on the network path between epa4all and any backend (ePA Aktensystem, Konnektor, IDP, TSS) can present a self-signed TLS certificate and intercept the connection. For non-VAU connections (Konnektor, IDP), this allows direct read and modification of the inner traffic, including smartcard operations and OIDC authentication exchanges. For the ePA backend, the disabled TLS verification is the transport-level enabler for the VAU MITM described in GHSA-vvh7-x6c7-46gh. This issue has been patched in version 2026-05-20.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-54342 is an improper certificate validation vulnerability (CWE-295) in med-united's epa4all software versions before 2026-05-20. An attacker positioned on the network path between epa4all and its backends (ePA Aktensystem, Konnektor, IDP, TSS) can present a self-signed TLS certificate, bypassing TLS verification. For non-VAU connections (Konnektor, IDP), this allows interception and modification of inner traffic, including smartcard operations and OIDC authentication exchanges. For the ePA backend, this vulnerability enables a man-in-the-middle attack at the transport layer, facilitating the VAU MITM described in a related advisory (GHSA-vvh7-x6c7-46gh). The vulnerability is patched in version 2026-05-20.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker on the network path to intercept and modify sensitive communications between epa4all and backend services. This includes the ability to read and alter smartcard operations and authentication exchanges, potentially compromising user credentials and session integrity. The vulnerability does not impact availability but poses a high confidentiality and integrity risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in epa4all version 2026-05-20. Users should upgrade to this version or later to ensure proper TLS certificate validation and prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. No alternative mitigations are indicated.
