Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: kerberosmansour
Product: hulumi

Description

CVE-2026-48035 is a high-severity vulnerability in the open-source hulumi toolkit by kerberosmansour. Versions prior to 1.4.0 allowed AWS accounts created via AccountFoundation to have CloudTrail and Config audit logs deletable by any principal with S3 delete permissions, undermining audit log immutability and tamper-resistance guarantees. Sandbox-tier deployments lacked audit immutability entirely. This issue has been patched in version 1.4.0.

Technical Analysis

The hulumi toolkit before version 1.4.0 contained a vulnerability (CWE-1059) related to insufficient technical documentation and configuration that resulted in AWS CloudTrail and Config audit logs being deletable by any principal with S3 delete capabilities. This flaw affected the startup-hardened tier by allowing deletion of logs despite expectations of tamper-resistance, and sandbox-tier deployments had no audit immutability protections. The vulnerability was addressed and patched in hulumi version 1.4.0. The product is a cloud service, and the vendor manages remediation for this service.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows principals with S3 delete permissions to remove CloudTrail and Config audit logs, compromising the integrity and immutability of audit trails. This undermines the ability to reliably detect and investigate security incidents in affected AWS accounts. Sandbox-tier deployments have no audit immutability, further increasing risk. This can lead to loss of forensic evidence and reduced security assurance.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available in hulumi version 1.4.0 that addresses this issue. Since hulumi is a cloud service, the vendor manages remediation server-side. Users should ensure they are using version 1.4.0 or later to benefit from the fix. Check the vendor advisory for confirmation and further guidance.
