Published: 07/24/2026 (07/24/2026, 18:44:05 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: kerberosmansour
Product: hulumi

Description

CVE-2026-48036 affects hulumi, an open-source toolkit for cloud and platform infrastructure components. Prior to version 1.4.0, the product improperly handled exceptional conditions during drift detection in CI or cron jobs, causing transient adapter failures to be silently cached as 'all clear' and masking real attacks for up to six hours. Additionally, normal provider-version changes could be mistakenly escalated to incident severity. This undermines the reliability of verdict sources used in downstream incident workflows. The issue has been fixed in version 1.4.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability CVE-2026-48036 in hulumi (kerberosmansour project) is due to improper handling of exceptional conditions (CWE-755) during drift detection processes. Specifically, transient adapter failures were cached incorrectly as successful results, causing real security incidents to be masked for extended periods (up to six hours). Conversely, normal provider-version churn could trigger false incident alerts. This flaw compromises the integrity of incident gating workflows that rely on these verdicts. The vulnerability is addressed in hulumi version 1.4.0.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows real attacks or drift detection failures to be hidden for up to six hours, potentially delaying incident response. It also causes false positives by promoting routine provider-version changes to incident severity, which can waste resources and reduce trust in automated incident workflows.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in hulumi version 1.4.0. Users should upgrade to version 1.4.0 or later to resolve this issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated.
