VulnerabilityCVE-2026-48112cvecve-2026-48112cwe-190cwe-125
Published: 06/05/2026 (06/05/2026, 16:20:19 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: mcmilk
Product: 7-Zip

Description

7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. Versions 9.18 through 26.00 contain a heap out-of-bounds read in 7-Zip Ar handler BSD SYMDEF parser. A 4-byte heap out-of-bounds read exists in the Unix ar archive parser in 7-Zip. When parsing a BSD-style __.SYMDEF symbol table, the ParseLibSymbols function reads a 32-bit namesSize field via Get32 at a position that can equal the buffer size, reading 4 bytes past the end of the heap allocation. This reads uninitialized heap data under the default allocator. Version 26.01 patches the issue.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in 7-Zip's Unix ar archive parser affects versions from 9.34 up to but not including 26.01. The flaw is a heap out-of-bounds read triggered during parsing of BSD-style __.SYMDEF symbol tables. Specifically, the ParseLibSymbols function reads a 32-bit namesSize field via Get32 at a boundary position equal to the buffer size, causing a 4-byte read past the heap allocation. This can lead to disclosure of uninitialized heap memory. The vulnerability is identified as CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound) and CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read). The issue is patched in version 26.01.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a heap out-of-bounds read, potentially exposing uninitialized heap memory contents. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.5 (medium severity), reflecting that the vulnerability can be exploited remotely without privileges but requires user interaction. The impact is confidentiality loss (C:H), with no integrity or availability impact. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Version 26.01 of 7-Zip patches this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to 7-Zip 26.01 or later to remediate this issue. Since no official vendor advisory or patch link is provided, confirm patch availability from the official 7-Zip project or trusted sources before upgrading. No other mitigation or workaround is indicated.
