CVE-2026-49257: CWE-306: Missing Authentication for Critical Function in startreedata mcp-pinot

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-49257cvecve-2026-49257cwe-306
Published: 06/18/2026 (06/18/2026, 21:01:10 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: startreedata
Product: mcp-pinot

Description

mcp-pinot is a Python-based Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for interacting with Apache Pinot. In versions 3.0.1 and below, mcp-pinot defaults to running an HTTP MCP server bound to 0.0.0.0:8080 with no authentication enabled. All MCP tools, including SQL query execution, schema creation, and table-config mutation, are reachable by any network-adjacent caller. The server proxies these calls using server-side Pinot credentials, producing a confused-deputy condition that yields full read/write access to the configured Pinot cluster. This issue has been fixed in version 3.1.0

Technical Analysis

The mcp-pinot Python-based MCP server for Apache Pinot versions 3.0.1 and earlier defaults to an unauthenticated HTTP server bound to all interfaces (0.0.0.0:8080). This configuration exposes all MCP tools, including SQL query execution, schema creation, and table configuration mutation, to any network-adjacent caller without authentication. The server proxies these requests using server-side Pinot credentials, resulting in a confused-deputy vulnerability that grants full read/write access to the configured Pinot cluster. This security flaw is addressed in version 3.1.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker with network access to the mcp-pinot server can perform unauthorized operations such as executing arbitrary SQL queries, modifying schemas, and changing table configurations on the Apache Pinot cluster. This leads to complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability compromise of the Pinot data and services. The CVSS score of 10 reflects the critical severity of this vulnerability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade mcp-pinot to version 3.1.0 or later, where authentication is properly enforced for all MCP functions. Until upgraded, restrict network access to the mcp-pinot server to trusted users only, as no official patch or temporary fix is documented beyond the version upgrade.
