CVE-2026-50737: CWE-250 Execution with Unnecessary Privileges in EnterpriseDB pglogical

0
Critical
Published: 07/28/2026 (07/28/2026, 19:17:00 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: EnterpriseDB
Product: pglogical

Description

When applying replicated changes for a row that is missing one or more columns, pglogical evaluates the affected table's default expressions on the subscriber. Because the apply worker runs at a privilege level equivalent to a PostgreSQL superuser in default installations, any function invoked by such a default expression also runs at that privilege. A party acting as the publisher can use this path to cause functions to be executed on the subscriber as superuser, escalating from a role permitted to use pglogical to full superuser. This is a second, independent path to the same superuser escalation tracked under CVE-2026-50736 (the pglogical queue issue). To exploit the issue an attacker must be able to direct a subscription at an endpoint they control. In default installations this requires privileges normally reserved for a superuser, so the issue is most relevant to managed deployments where the ability to create subscriptions has been delegated to non-superuser roles.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises because pglogical's apply worker runs with superuser privileges by default. When applying replicated changes for rows missing columns, default expressions are evaluated on the subscriber with these elevated privileges. If a malicious publisher directs changes invoking functions within these defaults, those functions execute as superuser on the subscriber. This creates a privilege escalation path from a role permitted to use pglogical to full superuser. Exploitation requires control over the subscription endpoint, which generally requires superuser privileges, limiting the risk primarily to managed deployments with delegated subscription creation.

Potential Impact

An attacker with the ability to act as the publisher and direct a subscription to an endpoint they control can escalate privileges on the subscriber to superuser. This can lead to full control over the subscriber database instance. The vulnerability is critical due to the high privileges involved and the potential for complete system compromise. However, exploitation requires specific conditions, including the ability to create or redirect subscriptions, which is typically restricted to superusers in default setups.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict the ability to create or modify subscriptions to trusted superuser roles only. Avoid delegating subscription creation privileges to non-superuser roles in managed environments. Monitor vendor advisories for updates regarding official patches or mitigations.
