CVE-2026-52723: CWE-295: Improper Certificate Validation in fbeta-GmbH ePA3-Service-OpenSource

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-52723cvecve-2026-52723cwe-295
Published: 08/18/2026 (08/18/2026, 16:50:49 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: fbeta-GmbH
Product: ePA3-Service-OpenSource

Description

ePA 3.x Integration implements the authorization workflow and writes Medical Information Objects to Germany's electronic patient record. Prior to 1.3.0, ePA 3.x Integration performs VAU server certificate validation in app/vau/VAUProtokoll.py without anchoring the signed_vau_server_pub_keys and AUT_VAU_CertData certificate path to independent trusted material. A network-positioned attacker between the DiGA backend and the ePA system can intercept the VAU handshake, supply attacker-controlled certificate and key material, and satisfy the circular trust relationship. Because TLS certificate verification is also disabled in affected versions, no independent server-authentication layer prevents the attack. The attacker can impersonate the VAU server, control the negotiated session keys, and read or modify all encrypted VAU traffic. This issue is fixed in version 1.3.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability arises from improper certificate validation in the ePA 3.x Integration component of the ePA3-Service-OpenSource product. Specifically, before version 1.3.0, the VAU server certificate validation in app/vau/VAUProtokoll.py does not anchor the signed VAU server public keys and AUT_VAU_CertData certificate path to independent trusted material. Additionally, TLS certificate verification is disabled, allowing a network-positioned attacker to intercept the VAU handshake, present attacker-controlled certificates, and satisfy the circular trust relationship. This enables the attacker to impersonate the VAU server, control session keys, and read or modify all encrypted VAU traffic. The vulnerability is addressed in version 1.3.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker positioned between the DiGA backend and the ePA system can intercept and manipulate the VAU handshake, impersonate the VAU server, and gain full access to encrypted VAU traffic. This compromises confidentiality and integrity of sensitive medical information exchanged in Germany's electronic patient record system. The vulnerability does not affect availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in version 1.3.0 of ePA3-Service-OpenSource. Users should upgrade to version 1.3.0 or later to remediate the issue. No vendor advisory is provided to indicate alternative mitigations or temporary fixes. Patch status is not yet confirmed beyond the stated fix version; users should verify with the vendor for current remediation guidance.
